What I Learned from Online Learning

I remember it clearly. It was fall 1985.  I was living in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.  I was managing and co-hosting a nationwide Christian radio talk show.   I was married and had two children at that time.   My educational experience was limited to a three year bible college program.

I knew deep down that I needed to find an accredited and reputable school that would accept the majority of my credits.  But I was really stuck.  Should I explore one of the state schools that were within an hour drive?  Should I consider displacing my family to attend an out of state school?  Sound familiar?

Then I was introduced to Liberty University’s School of Lifelong Learning.  This revolutionary program offered accredited degree programs in a video based format.  For that time it was certainly cutting edge.  And they would accept the majority of my credits.   But there was one major problem.  After all my research and review, I still needed to take that step to make application and begin the process.  That is a big step!  My gut is telling me that there are thousands of potential students who are are stuck at this stage.

If you are in this place my advice is simple — you need to have a vision for what you want to accomplish with your schooling.  Vision will be the launching pad for your reentry into the educational space.  I think the following quote sums it up best:  “Vision is the God given energy that makes you become a risk taker. Here is where the men are separated from the boys.”  Don’t put off making that decision which will change your life forever.  It did for me.
